Do I need to disclose AI-generated content?

Disclose when the content is realistic and synthetic — a generated person, voice, place, or event that a viewer could mistake for real. AI-assisted writing, editing, captioning, and clipping of genuine footage do not require disclosure.

What the platforms require

TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube all have labelling rules for realistic AI-generated media and apply automatic labels when their systems detect it. Undisclosed realistic synthetic content risks removal, which is a bigger cost than the label itself.

A simple working rule

If a reasonable viewer could believe something happened that did not, label it. If AI only helped you say something true faster, do not clutter the post with a disclaimer.

  • Generated presenter, voice clone, or synthetic event → disclose
  • AI-drafted caption for a real photo → no disclosure
  • Auto-captions and auto-cropping → no disclosure
