Which engagement rate should you report?
All three are legitimate; they answer different questions. Engagement rate by reach tells you whether the people who saw the post cared. Engagement by impressions is deliberately conservative, since one person can generate several impressions. Engagement by followers is the industry-standard figure used in sponsorship conversations, even though it punishes accounts whose reach comes mostly from non-followers.
The formulas
- ER by reach = total interactions ÷ reach × 100
- ER by impressions = total interactions ÷ impressions × 100
- ER by followers = total interactions ÷ followers × 100
Total interactions here means likes, comments, shares, and saves. Saves and shares matter most: they are the strongest signals in current ranking systems, and they correlate best with sustained reach.
Reading benchmarks honestly
Benchmarks vary by account size, niche, and format. Small accounts routinely outperform large ones. Use the ranges as a rough sanity check, then compare each post against your own 30-day median — that is the only benchmark that reflects your audience.

It creates a useful first draft. You should add your experience, proof, offer, and voice before publishing. The best output is a starting point, not a substitute for judgment.
Which tool should I use first?
Use the post idea generator when you need angles, the content calendar generator when you need structure, and the caption or hook tools when you already know what you want to say.
